rESCUE & rEHABILITATION

What We Do

The aim for the Western Australian birds of Prey Centre (WABOPC) is to return the birds back into the wild as soon as possible.

Each bird that comes into care is assessed, treated and then placed in a tailored made program. The length of the program is dictated by the age, species and severity of the injury. Programmes can vary short term 2-3 weeks resulting from loss of habitat, dehydration or long term 6 – 12 months resulting from broken wings or legs. In some cases the bird of prey coming into captivity may need fitness work or hunting experience. These birds are placed on a long term rehabilitation program.

Falconry

Falconry, the use of a bird of prey to actively hunt live animals is illegal in Western Australia. This sport was banded back in the 60’s. However some of the techniques that rehabilitators use are suitable for rehabilitation in Western Australia.

The use of carcases to simulate hunting, by dragging across the ground or swinging through the air help the birds of prey to refine their hunting skills before been released back into the wild.
